Earth Quakes Shake em and Bake em...
Sitting at my folks having birthday cake a 5.4 earthquake shook the house. Everyone seems to be safe but Rudy & Louise's house is in the Chino area and that appears to be the epicenter. Stay tuned for more info!

That's kind of a coincidence: a 5.4 earthquake on my 54th birthday!

REFLECTING ON THE PAST WEEKEND!

Busy and fun!
Yes I had a very fun weekend entertaining NFL celebrities, helping to celebrate George's 70th birthday, Kay's 45th birthday , seeing my old buddy Larry Lee & Rose show up at the Wave House then again that night at the Galley all with his Uncle Dan and Aunt Judy who were in town visiting from Folsom CA. What a blast for me.

Thanks so much to Jim Weatherley for having the Buffed Out Band entertain the 90th birthday party of a living San Diego legend, Capt Suzie. 200 people high atop the hills at Jim's La Jolla home. Jim is retired from the NFL and played with the Oakland Raiders the Atlanta Falcons, and Washington Redskins. It was a class act group and I was proud of the band and our show. Thanks so much Jim. We'll see you at the NFL Golf Tournament Party!

Thanks also to the California Yacht Marina for having Ron and I entertain your customer appreciation event for the third year in a row. We had a great time although it was not the same without John Duff in attendance. We sure miss you bud.

To all my friends at the Galley: You all are so special to me. These friendships are among the greatest gifts this guitar player ever had. I guess it comes down to this: Having the best friends any man could ask for! What more does any man need in this life??? I'm a Lucky Man!

God bless you all. I hope these days never end...

Monday Night Show
Magic!
Pure Magic!
That is how it felt Monday night.
Thanks to Steve Or Ed Fink, & Ron Bell
for joining me for the most fun jam session show I have had in ten years. It was absolute fun. My folks came out and sang along and had such a wonderful time. To see the smiles on their faces was pure joy for this son! It just doesn't get any better than this! Steve Or, you are the man!
Future show with the four of us coming to the Galley soon...

This one is Going to Leave Mark!
Just Another Weekend in the Sun!
How many more years can I run at this pace??? Who knows but THIS was a great weekend for me. Four shows in three days all on the water of Mission Bay and Mission Beach!

Ron and I did Friday's show on the rooftop patio of Dan & Michela's newly remodeled home next door to the Catamaran Hotel with a southern view of the bay all the way to the fireworks show provided by Sea World. Great fun night!

Then Saturday morning 8:30 AM back down on the bay ... Wow... when was the last time my band got shut down because we were too loud? Must have been the Frat Parties we used to do at SDSU back in 1980 something...  Well it happened again! This time the Buffed Out Band was out in the cockpit of a 52' Sea Ray on Mission Bay at the Marine Max "Aqua Palozza" raft-up rocking the boats and the people on shore. Picture 35 Sea Ray boats all tied up together... very cool scene. The police approached our boat/stage and tied up to the stern... after explaining the law and being very friendly and eventually citing us for "noise pollution" (nice)... they left... where immediately the Coast Guard boat with a film crew on board filming some reality TV show tied up and boarded us. We went acoustic at that time singing Take it Easy and Southern Cross as the film crew shot video ... look for the video to show up some time on TV and U-Tube ... a special thanks to our good friends George & Kay who joined us in their dingy... Even with all the legal issues this show was one for the books... a totally fun day.
Marine Max... thanks so much for a great time! Lets do it again somehow somewhere...

Then unload everything off the boat, which wasn't quick and easy as it was 270 steps to the side walk with about 15 heavy-loads to walk over the sand ... then load up and head to the next show... Breaking the same laws we were cited for earlier in the day I set the stage up on the shore of South Point Mission Bay (less then a mile from the day's first show) doing a fun 3 hour show for Karen Saylor's group: The Silver Gate Yacht Club. At one point the police drove right by us but we saw him in time and instantly went acoustic disguising the stage with blankets and coats... we got away without a second citation for the day!
I truly love entertaining my friends and my favorite yacht clubs. Thanks so much SGYC!

The Sunday show at The Wave House was the swan song of this weekend. The sun was out, we saw dozens of dolphins right from the stage, a fun appreciative crowd at hand, and Jim Grant parking illegally almost being towed... nice name dropping bud. Pete & Sallye and George & Kay all showing up rounded out a complete and fun weekend...

Thanks to everyone involved for a wonderful summer show weekend!
Oh my do I need some rest!

Special Offer! lol

As an entertainer I am connected to a private source for special events and special ticket pricing. I just received an email notice for discount tickets to see Jimmy Buffett. This is no joke. These are the ticket prices offered for Oct 16th, 2008 down here the San Diego area: 576 tickets available from $64 to $1151 each.
Wow somebody is doing something right if they can pay $1151 to see a show.

Brilliant minds
Wanted to share a poignant email I received this morning from a good friend in response to my concerns about the fires in and around Santa Barbara CA. Tom Lucy wrote:

"It looks like the fire in Goleta is well under control.  50 year old growth out there in the hills.  The weather has been kind… I rode to work this morning from Carpinteria up to Santa Barbara, just south of Goleta in fog. I thought about the firefighters and how much they must appreciate the fog!

In case you have any engineering in your blood… Let’s see… 50 year old  brush… will burn some day anyway in an uncontrolled fashion… let’s harvest it, burn in incinerators to gen steam to power electrical generators…

Hmmmmm…  Got any venture capital?

Sent With Much Love~~~
I just got an email that rocked me in a deep spiritual way. A friend of mine is in her last days of this life fighting cancer. The message is clear! Folks, stop and tell those people you love that you DO love them. Stop complaining about the little things that mean absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of this life. Live your life with passion and enjoy the little things...
Damn it I hate that anyone has to deal with this stuff. But somehow I have to trust that God understands the stuff you and I never will, not at least in this life.
Some would call me names that border on absurd and ridiculous for believing all of this. I do, so be it! Wishing you all peace of heart, good health, and a kind and gentle arm to wrap around you if something happens to you.
God bless you Vicki and Jack...
Audrey I love you so much

/ / / / Heroes Among Us / / / /

A while back I wrote a short story about my buddy
Jim Grant
having rushed into a burning building while many others stood by watching it burn. He is credited for saving the lives of several people at great risk to his own life.
The story has been picked up and Readers Digest is going to run the story.
How about that.
I know a REAL LIFE HERO!

Jim, believe it or not I know you got greatness in you!
I'll let you all know whent he story will appear!

One Day at a Time
Surfed with with bud James yesterday down in my old school neighborhood Law St in PB. Had a ball. No wetsuits just trunks and long boards... 5 foot sets came powering through and we made the most of it.
Then last night Ed came out to the show in Oceanside and laid down sweet percussion to my guitar.
Yes it was a fantastic day.
Summer of 08 ~~~ it's a gonna be great!

The Comic Has Gone~~~
George Carlin
May 12, 1937  - June 22, 2008

The incredibly funny and controversial George Carlin passed away June 22nd. Most of us that are from 45 to 85 years old grew up on his comedy which for me started as the Hippy Dippy Weatherman and on the Smothers Brother's comedy Hour and the Flip Wilson show.  He was famous for his skit on those "7-words you just can't say on TV".

George spanned several generations with his humor and God knows we ALL need to laugh a lot more...
I saw him in concert back in the late 1970s...
George, Thanks so much for all  the fun  memories~~~

King Tiger
Tiger Woods is out for the rest of this year. Surgery needed. I guess that should answer any questions about how much pain he was feeling this past weekend at the US Open tournament at Torrey Pines~~~

...the legacy of the greatest US Open in history??? The 108th US Open ends Tiger's career??? Could it be?

Father to Son
35 years ago today my son was born
I was 18 years old and in all honesty I knew I was beginning a great adventure for us both. How does an 18 year old kid know that? When the doctor told me I was going to become a dad I instantly felt something special inside. Mix that with a conversation I had in the months before my son was born where my father had said to me, "let that boy know you love him everyday of his life and it will all work out." Life is really really good, even with it's heartaches...
Thanks Dad, and thank you Lord for the greatest gift of my life.
Daron, Happy Birthday son. No one loves you more, and if they do then you're even more blessed then I thought.... Dad

Torrey Pines: US Open highlights!
Picture a beautiful park, grassy hills, hundreds  of tall trees softly blowing in the breeze all perched high above the magnificent blue Pacific Ocean for that's what it looks like from all vantage points. This park though is the most popular golf course in America this month: Torry Pines.

~ ~ ~ Is This heaven ~ ~ ~
Is this heaven? No! It's Torrey Pines!

IT'S FINALLY HERE!!!
THE US OPEN GOLF TOURNAMENT
Hits Torrey Pines
We've been anxiously awaiting this event ever since they awarded it to San Diego back in 2000 and if you didn't know this it's only the 2nd time in the 108 year history of this event where the US Open is being held on a municipal golf course... Why is that? ... that's because Torrey Pines is not just any municipal course. It's called the best backdrop in all of golf with it's rich green-grass rolling hills, canyons and jagged cliffs looming high above the beautiful deep blue Pacific Ocean. Whales, dolphins, colorful hang-gliders and sail planes can all be seen from many of the holes.
They've made many significant changes to the course to make this the most difficult golf course in this country for this event. The best players from around the world are here! Record numbers of fans have come from around the country and the globe. There are more sports reporters here from around the world than any other sporting event in this country with the exception of the Superbowl. Tickets have been sold to people from 28 different countries.  Folks The US Open is THE  EVENT!
So now it's our turn... The 108th US Open comes to our little piece of golf heaven. It's going to be a very exciting week for golf fans especially those of us that will be going to the tournament (YES! Yours truly will be attending in person!) If you're not a golf fan stay away from Torrey Pines and La Jolla. It will be a zoo!!! But if you are a golf fan and live here or can get here in the next five days we'll see you there!

(Leave your cell phone in your car. You will not be allowed to take it on the course. No exceptions.)
LIFE IS GOOD!!!
Oh I forgot... The paring of this century is set!
Tiger and Phil tee off together Thursday at 8:06 AM.
I'll be there!

Another Great Man is Gone
Jim McKay
1921 - 2008

"Saturday was a sad day in the broadcasting world and in the sports world when we learned that Jim McKay had passed away. He was 86 years old."
Jim was the voice of sports to many of us baby boomers. His infamous comment on ABC's Wide World of Sports: "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat" none of us could ever forget. His story is amazing and I'm sadden for this loss.

Sydney Pollack
Sydney Pollack
1934 - 2008

I almost missed this. I'm so bummed to hear today that Sydney Pollack passed away on Wednesday. You may not remember him but you will know his movies when you hear the titles:
The Firm... Sabrina ... Jerimaha Johnson ...  Tootsie  ...
Out of Africa ...  The Way We Were ... Absence of Malice... Michael Clayton... Cold Mountain ... Honeysuckle Rose ... just a few that come to mind.

I loved this big hearted guy. He was a great Hollywood director, producer and actor and I'll miss him. A gentle man and a good soul is gone... Damn!

Memorial Day Means something to me!
Say your prayers today.
Thank God for the blessing of living in America. Thank God for the blessing of our freedoms that we may all too often ignore or take for granted. Thank God that we can live how and where we want to live. Thank God that we don't live in a war torn area. Pray for our soldiers. Pray for the innocent people that live in the war torn areas around the world. Pray for the people in China who just yesterday suffered another horrible earth quake.   Today is not a day meant to drink mass quantities of alcohol and eat BBQ although many people will. It's a day set aside to honor those men and women who sacrificed to help this country be the great country we are.   We are not in great shape right now but we are America. We will right the course and we will be back strong and healthy one day. But it will take our prayers and a lot of hard work.   God bless you today and God bless America.

We have a great team and a continued window of opportunity with these players and coaches for a few years to come. Don't hang your heads San Diego. Be proud of what you've accomplished this year. You are among the four best teams in football this year. There are 28 other teams that wished they could be right here...

Hero
My friend Jim Grant, who is something of a character at times today proved, what I have always believed, that he is a good man... Jim stumbled onto a burning building before police or fire rescue had arrived. He asked the spectators watching things burn if anyone had gone in to check the building for people. They had not. He set his camera down and ran into the burning smoke filled building (3-times). He found a woman in a wheel chair and two kids. He first rescued the infant, then went back in and got the 5-year old child. The police had arrived at this time and Jim took one of the officers in with him to get the woman out. This is just a short recap but I'm very proud of you Jim! A friend and a hero of mine!
We can make a difference!!!

Congratulations to Paul & Jill Scott for a wonderful wedding and reception on Sunday.

Good people come along and touch our lives. They leave us feeling blessed for having them in our lives. In my life Paul and Jill are among these people.
Paul has been coming out to see my shows and Jerry Gontang's shows for over ten years ...when they decided to get married they said we want Jerry and Gary to do the music... they asked us to put a band together for their wedding day so Jer, Guy Hufferd, Gary Nieves and myself got together and we all had a ball.
It was a great day... Thanks so much for the friendship and the honor of entertaining your wedding Paul & Jill. What a great young couple you guys are...

Extra Space Storage, our customer, and our agent Linda and Gary from Canto Events along with the staff at the Westin Regina Hotel all worked together with us to host one of the most memorable corporate events any one of us have been a part of. It was magical... We all bonded and truly felt the love...

We debuted it on the beach during our "Lagoon Show" in Cancun and we also performed it yesterday at Chuck & Sue's birthday party here in town... Title: When it's Raining Down in Paradise...

Thank you Linda & Gary, Karen & Trisha and the Extra Space Storage team for a wonderful time in Paradise. Remember guys!!! NO BAD DAYS!

More than just a footnote in history...
...
Luciano Pavarotti was buried today in his home town in Italy...
One of the greatest voices of the past two hundred years has been silenced. Like his style or not you can sincerely argue that he will not be just a foot note in history. He will be held as one of the benchmarks for many years to come.

Something to think about as we celebrate our mid summer holiday.

July 4, 1776
A Day of Independence

There were 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Among them were two future presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. The oldest was Benjamin Franklin age 76.

Countless men women and children have given their lives to build this country. A country which not only allows more freedom to prosper than most any country in the history of this planet but also tolerates the right to openly and publicly make statements against her. We are blessed to live here and to have what we have. Never fail to understand and appreciate this.

I've posted a copy of this amazing document below. Click the words "READ MORE" just below on the right. Take five minutes and read this if you have time.
Talk about brilliance!
God bless you all and God bless America and all of our service men and women!

In the beautiful sunset evening hours of this past Saturday the friends of John Duff gathered on B-Dock to witness the renaming ceremonies of his vessel and home. Her old name lies at the bottom of the sea with Davie Jones and her new name has risen and she will from now on be known as

      SEA EAGLE

It was a great evening and a treat to have witnessed this event first hand. John, congratulations. You are truly of of the finest people I have ever known. If it's true what they say about a person's success and how it can be measured by the love and admiration he has from his friends and peers then my friend you got it all!!!

TIME HAS FLOWN BY!

My one and only niece is graduating high school today. She is one of the most precious people I have ever had in my life. Krissy is a very special soul. She has such a tender heart and a way to sift through the BS in life and see the goodness that's out there. She's always made her uncle feel like he's something special.
Krissy, I love you girl. I'm so proud of you and look forward to having some fun this summer before you head off to college! The Class of 2007 Rocks!

Two Whales...
It appears the two whales that were presumably lost in the Sacramento River have made it back to sea.
All of you people who have been worried here is a spin to the story that may relieve your worries... I would submit that this was a Mother and Daughter Whale that decided to take a vacation and tour the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento River. After all these are two very popular tourist places. What, you've never heard of vacation hot spots for whales?

Life is too short:

The Sunburn circuit or the Trop-Rock circuit lost one of the first of our entertainers to go recently to cancer.
Pete Harris, a good hearted laid back singer past away. Pete put out some great music and his wife just might be in need of your support at this time. Please click this link below and buy his CD Water Ways, and more...
God bless you Pete, I know where you are now. Maybe one day down the road we'll all do a show in heaven together.

Special Mother's Day Show

The show at the Galley Sunday night was one of the most special shows I've ever done. My Mom & Dad brought the whole family out and we had a wonderful time celebrating Mother's Day all of us together. This was the first time they have all come out in several years so it meant the world to me.
The guys in the band were firing on all cylinders.
what a night! What a great night!
Thanks across the board to everyone for a wonderful evening for me.

God bless you all.

Happy Mother's Mom
To the greatest lady of them all: My Mom

To say Happy Mother's Day to my Mom one day a year doesn't really accomplish expressing my gratitude for what she has meant to me throughout my life and for her undying love and commitment to all three of her children.
I was a single father at an early age and I could have never made it through that period in my life without leaning heavily on my Mom. The relationship I have with my son to this day is possible because my Mom was there helping me always. It would have been next to impossible for me but because of her love and effort day after day year after year in those first few years really made it possible for me to raise my son.
Mom, Thank you for giving me a wonderful life, for understanding me along the path I needed to travel, for the thousands of dinners you made for me, and for supporting me with your prayers and love and so much more. You are the greatest!!! God really gave me a gift when he chose you to be my Mom.
My life is so good because of what you have given to me.
Happy Mother's Day Mom. I love you so much...

Mahalo Nui
Don Ho
the legendary singer and entertainer who really brought Hawaiian music to most of us died yesterday in Hawaii. His biggest hit was Tiny Bubbles.
Don was 76 years old.
My sincere respects to his family.

Geronimo
The release of the single "Geronimo" is only a few days away... thanks to all the people in Cave Creek for the support of this song. I wasn't sure it would be received by the legion of fans and friends who have supported me over the years. Wow what a great reception you gave the song... God bless you all...

Dad

Happy Birthday Dad!

My Father is celebrating a huge Birthday today. He turns 80 years old. He is in excellent health and has a beautiful white head of hair, something his sons weren't able to hold on to.

We had the best family event ever this weekend to honor him. We are so lucky to still have him in our lives.

Dad, I love you more than you know. I thank God everyday that I still have you and Mom in my life. What a blessing.

Pop, celebrate your years, life long and stay healthy please... Your son, Gary

Life

This came from Karen Saylor. I haven't digested everything said here to know if I agree but it makes you think. I like it...

"Life is short -  break the rules, forgive quickly, kiss slowly, hug often, love truly, laugh uncontrollably, and never regret anything that made you smile."
